If you are new to yoga or want to take your practice one step closer, here are 5 tips for effective breathing during yoga:
1. Identify and understand different breathing styles
In yoga classes, you will often hear the teacher ask you to do “Ugyi” breathing, or “Ocean” breathing. “Ocean” breathing is to contract the back of your throat, making your inhalation and exhalation sound like ocean waves, helping you breathe slower, deeper, and more stable. Taking time out of class to learn how to breathe can help you breathe better in class.
Choose a comfortable, quiet place and close your eyes to practice breathing. Inhale, read “5″ silently in my heart, stop for a moment, and then exhale and count to “5″. Try to inhale and exhale smoothly. Once you are comfortable this way, try to count more numbers.
2. Breathe through the nose
Breathe with your nose to help you find the center, so that you can focus on the present and keep your mind and body calm. Nose breathing helps you stabilize your heart rate and body temperature.
3. Breathe in the asana
Sometimes you are doing a challenging yoga pose, and you will hear the teacher say “bring the breath into the pose” or “breathe into the tension of the body”. Breathing can guide you in challenging asanas and help you relax in the asanas.
4. Understand why your shortness of breath
When you change from conscious deep breathing to short shallow breathing, this is actually the body telling you to take a break. When this happens, listen to the voice of your body, understand where it is stuck, and how to let the energy pass there. Be nice to yourself, take a break when it is time to rest, and your body will tell you.
Let your breath guide you when you let your breath guide you to do the problem, you can increase your awareness of the body’s feelings and establish a stronger connection with yourself: self-awareness and self-belief. In this way, yoga will become more of an inner connection, not just a movement of various asanas.
Breathing consciously means that you are activating different parts of the brain, especially the cerebral cortex. When you breathe consciously, you are activating the cerebral cortex, which will make you more relaxed, not just on the Yoga Mat, but also in life.
